St. Mary's Of The Immaculate Conception
School and Church
Jane Lane/Swinton Hall Road
St. Mary's Church was opened in 1859 after it took a few years to build.
It was built on the former ground of the Unitarian Chapel, which was a cottage on Jane Lane (Swinton Hall Road) the spire of the church was lost due to it being hit by a bomb during the war.
The first Catholics to lived in the area of St. Mary's since the Reformation were Sam and Betty Davies from St. Helens they arrived in around 1812.
The potato famine of 1847 brought more Catholics to live in the area

Memories of the Whit Walks and St. Mary's School
What a treat it was walking on Whit Sunday with your best togs on.
We would walk along Swinton Hall Road, from St Mary's School up onto the top road Bolton Road and along to Station Road where we would meet children from other schools. Then the procession would carry on back down Station Road turning right back along Swinton Hall Road to the school. Along the way you would be greeted with cheers and given sweets and money.
We all have fond memories of Mrs Mather the Infant teacher from St Mary's, she had a heart of gold and really looked after us all.
