St. Augustines - The Miners Cathedral
Edward Stanley Heywood paid for the building of the church and school house, he was a Manchester banker, Heywood brothers & Co Edward Stanley Heywood died in 1914 and is buried in St. Augustines. The first vicar of St. Augustines in 1874 was Edwards brother-in-law Dr. Dewes. George Frederick Bodley, was the Architect of St. Augustines Church. Church Street at the side was once called Dewe Street probably after Dr. Dewes.

In memory of 178 men and boys who lost their lives in the explosion at the Clifton Hall Colliery on 18th June 1885 64 of them are buried at St. Augustines.
